About the center
CHIC will operate under the statutes of Universidad de Magallanes for the first 18 months. Thereafter, it will become a private nonprofit entity with the participation of associate institutions: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, U. de Chile, U. de Talca, U. Católica de Temuco, U. de Los Lagos, U. Central de Chile and Centro de Investigación en Ecosistemas de la Patagonia (CIEP). CHIC is a center with a biocultural and transdisciplinary approach integrating scientific research, ethics and education through three research lines: (1) “Sentinels of climate change” studying biodiversity response to this change; (2) “Sentinels of biocultural homogenization” which starts a new research line worldwide; (3) “Biocultural conservation” which proposes a solution through educational practices, sub-Antarctic gastronomy and public policies of protected areas considering human and ecosystem well-being. As such, CHIC will be a sentinel for global change that will propose solutions focused on sustainability and social-environmental justice.
